SFA Athletes Succeed in the Classroom

Jan. 23, 2008

SFA Team GPAs

NACOGDOCHES - If the Fall 2007 semester is any indication of what is to come in Spring 2008, then the academic side of things for SFA student-athletes should be in good hands after an outstanding semester in the classroom.

Overall, SFA student-athletes put together a 2.7 GPA for the Fall 2007 semester, while a record 21 student-athletes received their undergraduate degrees and even one earning a master's degree.

SFA placed 151 student-athletes on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.00 GPA), with 50 of those student-athletes being named to the Dean's List (3.50-3.99).

Also, a number of all-time high marks were set last semester including 24 student-athletes earning their way onto the President's Honor Roll. The President's Honor Roll includes all students that earn a 4.00 GPA for the semester.

"The academic success of our student-athletes is a focal point in our department, and these numbers are a reflection of the hard work of our athletes and the great university faculty they work with," SFA Director of Athletics Robert Hill said.

Coach Bret Arrant's women's tennis team was the only squad to finish with every member earning a 3.00 GPA or higher, while four teams - women's tennis (3.77), women's soccer (3.30), women's cross country (3.06) and volleyball (3.02) all finished with team GPA's exceeding 3.00.

SFA's women's teams finished up with a cumulative GPA of 2.88, pushing past the men's team's cumulative GPA of 2.50. The end of the semester also saw 63 fall-sport athletes honored by making the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.
